“One of the benefits of being an advisor is, you already know how long things take.” – Cynthia Lambakis

When you do a show like this long enough, like watching any family or group of friends, you see new partnerships form and others go away. This is a subject we have not talked about on the show and I am a little surprised. This episode features interior designer, Cynthia Lambakis. Cynthia is a returning guest from episode 63, I think. I was touring the Pasadena Showcase House of Design in 2016 and spoke with Cynthia and her design partner Samantha, both parts of Ederra Design. Now, Cynthia is out on her own, building her solo design studio. It reminds me that at one point, before Convo by Design, I was working on a different project and had a split with a creative partner. I learned some really powerful lessons about knowing when and why to walk away, what happens after and how to move on.

Cynthia and I talk about those same ideas in addition to her amazing sense of style, design ideas, approach to kitchen design and outdoor spaces. We chat about the frustrations in working on social media how to make the most wonderful design from the good bones of older architecture. Joan Behnke founded her namesake design studio in 1999. Since then, she has been trailblazing a path studded with interior design gems from LA to DC. Joan views interior design as a fine art and an exercise in self-expression. It’s both intimate and created for the world to see based on the unique personality of its inhabitant.

I met Joan at her studio and we sat for quite a while. She is in a really good place. The firm has enjoyed international recognition and while that is important, she has built her firm on her own ideas of what makes the work, good and worthy. I enjoyed my time with Joan, she is soft spoken but her words have tremendous impact and she is fierce in her ideas about design and the personal nature by which she connects it to her clients. We talked about exquisite craftsmanship and lasting beauty, both of which are key elements to her design philosophy. This is Joan Behnke.

When you hit a certain level of success and notoriety, you co from having two names, to being known by one. In the design and architecture circles of Southern California, the name “Rocky” leaves no mistake about whom we are speaking. Rocky LaFleur is a fixture of the design and architecture scene. Rocky has been in West Hollywood for over 40 years, dedicating his time to promote our community and help mentor the next generation of design professionals. I met Rocky at the Pacific Design Center and we talked for a while. He told me his story, his views on interior design in Southern California today and what it was like when he first got here. This really is the story of a small town boy coming to LA and helping to shape the design landscape. His influence is inextricably tied to the interiors in and around Los Angeles if for no other reason than the affect he has had on those he meets and mentors. If you have been listening to Convo By Design for a while, you have heard amazing stories about set decorators from your favorite TV shows and movies. I thought there should be a special place, just for those who create TV and movie magic. So, I have launched a new podcast called The Art Dept. featuring stories about design and creativity from behind the camera. You are still going to hear from them here on Convo By Design, but in addition to the set decorators, The Art Dept. is going to introduce you to production designers, fabricators, wardrobe, make-up and all of the other amazing creatives that you simply would never hear about.

This is an episode of The Art Dept, dedicated to the art behind movie and TV magic. This is an exploration and a showcase of the creatives that never write a line, say a single word nor appear on screen yet their work creates the scene, the feel and the backstory for the characters you love and love to hate. This episode features an interview with set decorator, Beth Wooke. Beth’s body of work is vast with some amazing shows, not the least of which is the TV smash hit, This Is Us. Beth defined the characters for us, showed us how the live, where and how they spend their time. We learn by how these characters live how they are like and unlike us. And these are people we have grown to care for, deeply. Beth defined these people in the first season and that really seems to be Beth’s super-power. I wanted to know more about how Beth does this, where she gets her inspiration from and they answer may or may not surprise you. What you will hear, is how this creative uses her personal experiences to shape the environment of the characters and makes them come to life in between the lines. Before we get to Beth, I want you to hear from another set decorator, Don Diers. Don has a truly diverse body of work. He has decorated sets for The Muppets, Jane the Virgin, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer.
